Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure that reduces the size of the stomach using an endoscope (a flexible tube with a camera). During the procedure, the endoscope is passed through the mouth into the stomach. Dr Shanker will fold and stitch the stomach wall, reducing its capacity and helping you to feel full faster.
ESG is considered a less invasive alternative to traditional bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, and can be performed under sedation in an outpatient setting. The procedure typically takes less than an hour and recovery time is usually short.
If you are significantly overweight or obese, ESG can help you achieve sustained weight loss, improve conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and enhance your overall quality of life. Like any medical procedure, ESG carries potential side effects and adverse reactions. It is important to discuss both risks and benefits and carefully consider all weight loss options before choosing any weight loss procedure.
